Eternal question ...

Some people have that nagging question. It's pretty easy. It comes in different forms. Basically, it goes: I can't do ______ because I don't know what I would do.

For example, I can't go to grad school because I don't know what I would major in. Or I can't open a store because I don't know what I would sell.

For me, I can't start a band because I don't know what we would play. Last time I tried, we started out being some punk/metal hybrid. By the second practice, we were southern rock. It's just the way my mind works.

The Beatles kind of had it made. Their music, in pretty much all of their stages, was all over the place. Can Iron Maiden be all over the place? Probably not. I guess Aerosmith could be a good example (up to 'Pump.' After that it's all lost). They could do 'Dream On,' 'Angel,' 'Nobody's Fault,' and then slip in 'Big Ten Inch Record' and somehow it all works. I guess it comes down to the personality of the members of the band.

The band in it's many incarnations has been Zen Fuego. It is a pretty elastic band name. Meaning, unlike Iron Maiden or Metallica or Air Supply you are not stuck with a genre of music because of your name.

As I am writing this I think my main fear is pretty irational. I am worried about creative flexibility over the course of a career. First off, this will not be my career so what's the point. Secondly, if it's not a career, then what the hell do I care if people don't want me to be flexible?

As I let you ponder, and as 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' is on the radio, I will fade away.

Zen Fuego forever!
